Chick #1 - 15 Days Old

Here is chick #1.  He (She) is now 15 days old.  I have banded him as well as chicks #2 & #3.  Chick #4 will be banded in a day or so, and Bitty baby # 5 will be banded in about 4 days or so.  Look how fast they grow!

This chick is looking like a female to me, but I will know for sure in a few more days!
You can see it is banded with the #60.  The bands I chose for this year are black with white writing.
It also carries the initials GCB and CA 11

Look how quickly the pins on the wings have come in.
The tail is also starting to emerge and the first showings of the head and body pins are forming.
The down feathers are also present and will pop open in a few days!

This is the same baby 6 days ago:

New Photo - 3 days - 11 days Old

The babies are now actually 13 days, 11 days, 9 days, 7 days & 4 days old!
Baby #5 is hiding down in the middle to keep warm!

It seems that baby #1 has clear nails, baby # 2 has clear nails, baby #3 has darker nails & baby # 4 looks to be getting darker nails.  Baby # 5 is too young to tell yet.  Clear nails are usually a sign of a pied baby, but again, too soon to tell.  I can see that the wings on baby #1 are going to be dark so if it is a pied it will be a light pied like the mother (meaning it won't have a lot of heavy pied markings).  I should be able to tell if it is male or female in about 5 - 7 days more. 3 of the 5 chicks have opened their eyes a bit.  So cute!  You can also see the beginnings of the pin feathers on body and heads coming in, finally they will get some fluff!

I really did get an "Easter Chick"!

Baby # 5 hatched this morning.  I didn't think he was going to hatch at all.  What a nice surprise.  Now you can see the difference in size from baby #1 who hatched on April 15th to baby #5 who hatched on April 24th.  They grow so quickly!

Baby # 1 - 9 days old!

This is baby # 1.  He is now 9 days old.  He is already showing tiny dark pins forming on his tiny wings.  It is hard to see in the photos.  His eyes have also opened a tiny bit, but the flash caused him to close them.  So Cute!

Easter Chicks!

Well, there are 4 healthy chicks.  I am not sure if egg # 5 will hatch.  The babies that have hatched have grown quite a bit since I took the photos 2 days ago!  This is an excellent sign.
Here are the 3 Easter Chicks before #4 hatched.

This is Ella guarding her babies!  She doesn't like to be bothered!

Baby # 4 Hatching!

He is a photo of chick #4 hatching.  He came out of the egg about 8 hours after this photo was taken.

Oh Joy! New Babies!

I am so afraid to post this!  Mochi & Ella are proud parents of 3 chicks with 2 more hatching! I am so excited!  I have been trying to leave them alone (Ella was hand fed as a baby, but she does not like to be bothered by me and my egg candler)

Mochi & Ella - Before the eggs!
Mochi finally got it right - He used to mate with his toys!

Mochi is a proud papa for sure!  Ella is a Turquoise Pied possibly split yellow & Mochi is a Dilute Blue (aka Amercian White).  If this is true they could produce Dilute Blue Turquoise chicks (aka White Turquoise). Both birds are nice and big.  The babies look so healthy and fat!  She won't let me take pictures yet!  I am hoping for some turquoise babies, and because Ella is a pied there is a chance of Pieds as well!  Happy day!

Miss Ella - Turquoise Pied Hen
She only has 2 tiny white spots on her wings
and a few white feathers on her body, and clear nails.
